In Reaper the Tab key can be used to advance the play-head to the next measure. This is a useful hot-key to use when tempo mapping a song. The following steps show how to create a new Reaper action for this purpose:
- Click the Actions menu.
- Click Show action list.
- In the Actions window click the Section drop down menu and select MIDI Editor from the list.
- In the Filter text box enter the keyword measure.
- In the filtered list of results select Move edit cursor forward on measure (Figure 1).

- Click the Add button to define a keyboard shortcut (Figure 2).
Figure 2: Click Add button. |
- In the configuration window click the Special key (Enter, Tab, etc.) button (Figure3).
Figure 3: Click the Special key (Enter, Tab, etc.) button. |
- The Special key (Enter, Tab, etc.) button will now be greyed out and the Shortcut text field will be waiting for user input. Press the Tab key (Figure 4).

- Click the OK button to close the Keyboard/MIDI/OSC Input window.
- Click the Close button to exit the Actions window.
Pressing the Tab key in Reaper will now move the edit cursor forward a single measure. This is helpful when tempo mapping songs with consistent time signatures as it moves the edit cursor close to where the next tempo marker should be placed.
